Page 14 entitled: "The Cheat Mt. Campaign."

Contains the obituary of Captain James R. Kelly. Reports that he died of a wound recieved in battle near Winchester, VA on March 23. The report details the exploits and successes of the 14th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, of which Kelly was Captain, and describes him as "an honest, upright businessman... ever punctual in the discharge of his duties, and faithful to the interests of the Company." The release of Roberta's brother, William, who is being detained as a prisoner of war at Fort Delaware. Virginia informs Roberta that, upon receiving a letter from William, Admiral Farragut addressed a letter to the commanding officer at Fort Delaware for his immediate release. The process is being delayed, however, by the lack of cooperation from Federal officers. Virginia talks about her great sadness due to the course of the war but expresses great relief that her family was safe--"...God had blessed us in every way, so mercifully protecting my husband and son from "shell and shot"..."…

Discusses other casualties from the battle of Fredricksburg.

Warns her to watch any Cavalry men that may be in the area because they steal chickens and "beecomes." Offers a lengthy description of their meeting and life in heaven. Advises her to direct her letters: "In car[e] of Capt. Henery Stuarts Hors Artillary, W. H. F. Lee[s Brigade, Richmond, Virginia."

Writes two letters from Camp Lee; one to Harvey and George and the other to his wife Mary Epperly. Informs Mary that the Cavalry is being issued furloughs but his Captain will not issue any. He thinks the unit will desert if they do not receive furloughs. Notes he wants a transfer to Preston's Cavalry. Writes to Harvey and George offering them double pay for doing his share of the work. Apologizes for calling them boys and explains "I am in the habit of calling men boys . . . ."

States that she believes the army is not interested in catching deserters because there are too many of them. She addresses her husband as "Marion" (possibly Epperly's middle name). Top quarter of first page written in very light pencil.
