View of large field with the camp of the 31st infantry visible in the center. The 31st was a regiment of Pennsylvania volunteers organized in Harrisburg in June 1863 and mustered out in August 1863. Fence runs diagonally across two-thirds of the image. A few soldiers are pictured standing near the tents. Another smaller camp is seen in the distance, to the right of the main camp. Homes are visible in the far background, in front of a large forest of bare trees.

Grant later used Orchard Knob as an observation post.

On November 25th, Union soldiers captured Missionary Ridge and held it as a logistics base for General William T. Sherman's 1864 campaigns through Atlanta.

The sky has been double-printed. Resaca was the site of a May 13-15, 1864 battle between Union forces led by General William T. Sherman and Confederate troops commanded by General Joseph E. Johnston. Sherman employed a flanking technique that proved successful in overpowering Johnston's command, winning the battle for the Union.

A man sits on a fallen tree trunk on the right side of the road. Buzzard Roost refers to a gap between the mountains north of Resaca, Georgia through which Union General William T. Sherman directed two columns to meet Confederate troops during the May 9, 1864 Battle of Rocky Face Ridge. The 5-day battle lasted from May 7 - May 13 and resulted in a Union victory.

Confederate Brigadier General Francis A. Shoup supervised construction of fortifications along the north bank of the Chattahoochee River during the summer of 1864, in the lead up to the July 5, 1864 skirmish at Pace's Ferry. The Confederates were forced to retreat across the river to the southern bank. They were pursued by Union soldiers who crossed the river on July 9, 1864.

He won international recognition following his reporting of the Crimean War from 1851-1855. During the American Civil War, Russell reported on the July 21, 1861 First Battle of Bull Run, in which an initially successful Union attack gave way to a strong Confederate counterattack and a Union retreat. Vignetted half-length standing portrait of Union general Henry Slocum, Sr. in Napoleonic pose. Clothing, hands, and parts of face heavily painted over. Water stains at the edge. Slocum led and participated in several campaigns throughout the American Civil War, including the Maryland Campaign and the Carolina Campaign. He resigned his commission on September 28, 1865 and returned to New York, where he unsuccessfully ran for New York secretary of state that year. Slocum served three terms as a Democratic Congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives (from 1869 to 1873 and from 1883 to 1885).
