Written by Randolph as a U.S. Congressman from Virginia to Major Scott. In his carelessness, says he forgot to ask Scott to procure supplies for Roanoke. Said if he had gone to Petersburg he would have bought them there because they are cheaper, but he was unable to go. Says that yesterday they were on the point of a legislative victory for arming the militia. Fears it will be "snatched from our hands by an adjournment." Wax seal partially extent.

In a vertical postscript she writes, "I trust you are keeping an eye out about renewing the Copy right of Uncle Tom ["Uncle Tom's Cabin"]." Written from Mandarin, the Stowe's vacation home in Florida. Two black and white bust engravings of Stowe included.

Contains a petition on the deprivation of voting rights for the members of the House of Representatives in Queens County and the Island of Nassau, as well as a complaint about unfair taxation. Cornbury was governor of New York and New Jersey from 1701 to 1708.

Writing to his wife, he encloses a letter to be "sent to the printing office to Mr. McDermot or Mr. Pendleton immediately." Campbell was the principal founder of the Disciples of Christ. From 1830 onward many of his short pieces first were printed in the Millennial Harbinger. Pendleton is possibly William Kimbrough Pendleton, who edited the Millennial Harbinger from 1846 to 1855. Date of letter inferred from the operating years of Campbell's printing office at Bethany, Virginia, 1843 until his death in 1866.

Questions the veracity of the piece and suggests that if Roberts can provide evidence to his readers, this would create such indignation that it would "put an end to these atrocities." In a p.s. he warns him: "you will make no reference to this communication in your paper." Recipient is possibly the George Roberts who edited the Boston Times from 1852 to 1855.

Protestants as we are, we will all shout, Viva Papa Pio IX." Supposes that Mancinelli knows his American acquaintances now in Rome, including Mr. Cranch, Mr. Story, and Margaret Fuller. Pius IX ruled from 1846 to 1878. Loring is possibly George Bailey Loring, M.D.

Also signed by President of the Bank Sidney Rigdon. Numbered 1493. Printed from plates obtained in Philadelphia from Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty. The Kirtland Safety Society Anti-Banking Company, which issued the notes, attempted without success to get a charter for the bank from the Ohio legislature in 1836 and 1837. The bank failed in the summer of 1837. Signed by Smith as Cashier.

Congratulates him on his "success in helping achieve the first victory which the North has won over the South since 1808, when the slave trade with Africa was abolished. I might better say, the first victory of freedom over Slavery since the Declaration of Independence -- for there was no fight in 1808." Banks was a member of Congress from Massachusetts. In 1856 he declined the presidential nomination of the American party.
