Tells her that she should be direct in letting him know what she needs as he is willing to help her in any way. States that he planned to decline serving another year as President (possibly of the Executive Council of Pennsylvania) but that the country demanded him. Informs that he has been in public office for 50 years now. Mentions in particular teachers "Mr. Allison" (formerly of Edinburgh and Glasgow) and Theophilus Grew and gives him some particulars of the libraries and his financing of the Academy.

Burr informs Rutgers that Mr. Beckman has been searching titles for Alexander Hamilton and since he has not found him, he returned the titles. States that the titles are to be exhibited by Thomas L. Ogden at Hamilton's office at 69 Stone Street. Asks him to make sure it is done this afternoon and advises that Ogden will be staying at home for this purpose. No year is included in the date.

Letter written by Hancock, a Declaration of Independence signer, as President of the Continental Congress to his wife. Apparently written on the road to Congress. Says he is stuck where he is until the ice is cut and he can cross with the ferry. Says "My Boy" Joe has treated him ill when he got drunk on his wine, broke several bottles, and dropped his trunk out of the wagon, which was later found. He was brought to the inn drunk and put to bed. Hancock says he will "turn him adrift" once he gets to Philadelphia. He is glad he did not leave him with her, because he "would have been a plague."…

Madison writes to Brown, then a Kentucky lawyer and later a senator, to promise further communication of his thoughts on making Kentucky a state. Also comments cryptically, because he has no cypher established with Brown, about his sentiments regarding "our confidential conversation just before your departure." Indicates that he has anticipated "every political calamity," probably referring to Spain's efforts to get Kentucky to become an independent state. Includes two resolutions passed by Congress on September 16, 1788 relating to American rights to the Mississippi River.

Madison sends Brown, a former Kentucky senator, a copy of letter from Madison to Mann Butler. The copy, dated October 11, 1834, provides a recollection of the 1788 correspondence between Madison and Brown regarding Spain's efforts to get Kentucky to become an independent state. It also attests to the friendship between Madison and Brown and directs Butler, who was writing about the period, to other sources.
