Beauregard encloses "a copy of the Plans of the Battle of Shiloh made to accompany my Report of said Battle. It will enable you better to understand my explanation the other day." Beauregard, by not pursuing a final attack on Ulysses S. Grant at Shiloh, allowed the Federal forces to regroup and achieve victory. The name of the recipient has been cut-off. 1 black and white bust engraving of Beauregard included.

He also expresses his thoughts about his position: "I knew that everything I cherish and hold dear would be sacrificed by accepting this office. But I thought I might help to save the country and for that I am willing to perish." Written on four folios.

Beauregard replies to an inquiry about the origins of the name "Stonewall" for General Thomas J. Jackson after the 1st Battle of Manassas (Bull Run). He refers him to his article titled "Bull Run" and published in the Century. He remarks, "Most of us wore our old U.S. Uniforms at the Battle [of Bull Run] with our state buttons instead of the old ones." He informs Lawsing that he was the first brigadier general appointed in the Provisional Army of the Confederacy, and was the 5th full General appointed after the Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) on July 21, 1861.
