Asks for Hamilton's help if he is traveling to Albany. Is a purchaser, with Hamilton and others, of lands around the St. Lawrence River, the patents for which lands have been taken out of the Land Office in the name of Alexander Macomb. Aside from lands purchased by the state, certain portions of the land picked by a group led by General [Philip] Schuyler were to be paid for by Knox and several others. Would like Hamilton to determine how much Knox needs to pay and to whom he should direct the payment.

Also discusses family news, congratulating the Knox family on the birth of a new son.

Secretary of War Knox writes to his sister-in-law Hannah acknowledging her letter to him the previous June. Knox believes Hannah has done all she can to "consistently" tell Mr. Longman '"the state of things." Knox discusses his land dealings and values, and the prospects of obtaining and selling different lands. States that his brother will deliver this letter and will update her on family news. Reports that they will soon move to Philadelphia (the United States government moved from New York to Philadelphia in December 1790).

Mrs. Harwood tells Secretary of War Knox that she received his letter through William Knox ten days before. She discusses a dispute over whether Knox must provide a receipt to his creditors in London. Mrs. Harwood is acting as a liaison for Knox. Agreement signed by Hart with his mark. The document is in the hand of the witness, Reiner John Van den Brock, who also signed it. States that Hart is to supply Knox's stable with 12 tons of hay from the date of this document to 1 April 1792. Hay to be weighed at Knox's stable. Knox is to pay 3 pounds, 17 shillings, and sixpence in Pennsylvania currency, including the cartage.

Hamilton insists he must remain silent as to his opinion about this unspecified matter.

Knox relates to Sargent, Parker, and Phillips the assaults and death of his surveyors by "unlawful and armed combinations of individuals" who had only murder as their intention on July 18, 1800. Knox asks that they bear in mind the "law of the Commonwealth passed the 20th day of February 1787, entitled "an act for the more speedy and effectual suppression of Tumults and insurrections in the Commonwealth." Knox wants these perpetrators punished.
