Possibly a copy in the hand of Brigadier General Eliakim P. Scammon to whom the telegram was probably sent. Informs that a scout, Low Jacobs, found a path fit for infantry, but not cavalry. Gives the number of Confederate forces in their area of West Virginia, and states that some are advancing to reinforce Raleigh. Writes, "Officers heard to say if we did not attack them soon they would us. They expect to advance with six thousand, take Fayette and clear the valley - This very doubtful."

Published by J. Wrigley at 27 Chatham Street in New York. Marked No. 844 at the top. Sung to the tune of "Annie Lisle." That song is an 1857 ballad by Boston, Massachusetts songwriter H. S. Thompson. The song is about the death of a young maiden, by what some have speculated to be tuberculosis, an awful circumstance which mirrors the tragic death of the young Colonel Ellsworth in Alexandria, Virginia.
