Collection of six letters by a soldier in the 42nd Mississippi Volunteers. A letter from 7 April 1863 describes a skirmish and includes an additional note from 8 April, which appears to be addressed to a slave: "I have been a good master to you... stay close to home with your mistress.... Your Master." His final letter of 12 April 1863 says he will desert if he can't get home.

The four letters from James (written from Terry, Mississippi) to his father, Philip Richard Fendall II, offer accounts of the destruction of war, his reasons for desiring a federal appointment, problems of loyalty oaths, and politics in Mississippi involving Governor William Sharkey and Albert Gallatin Brown.

Cushing enlisted in June 1861 in the 1st Rhode Island Artillery, and was promoted to the 4th U.S. Army Light Artillery in November 1861. In the letter of 19 December 1862, he discusses his experiences on the march with his troops. Key battle material relating to the Chattanooga Campaign appears in letters dated 21 and 28 September, 10 and 14 October, and 22 November 1863. Letter from 28 September also contains a drawing showing artillery positions at Chickamauga.
