Reports that he has discharged most of the troops remaining in service besides a small number at Fort Pitt, Pennsylvania, and West Point, New York. Discusses arrangements being made in light of the troops' dispersal. Reports that several officers will remain in service (John Doughty, Samuel Jefferds, and Captain Lieutenant Johnson). Discusses continued arrangements for invalids and refugees, hospital staff, and stores.

Writes, "It is in indeed extraordinary that General Haldimand shall have received official information of the ratification of the definitive treaty of peace, and not at the same time have received orders respecting the delivery of the posts." Written from Fort Pitt, the location of present-day Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Discusses his arrival at the fort the month before, and describes which officers and companies are there, or are on their way. Includes returns of personnel and stores, and complains that the stores have not been well-maintained. Also indicates the high rate of desertion from the fort. Provides intelligence he has received from a Moravian Indian called "John Bull" (who is called "Sheebo" by other Indians), which consists of the movements of local Indian groups (including Moravian, Chippewa and Ottowa Indians)…

Marked "copy" in docket. Discusses the "pitiable case" of Haskins's son-in-law, Mr. John Inman, who has been imprisoned for debt and has become "deprived of his reason." Upon hearing about the case, Knox took a physician to evaluate him and then decided to help him make arrangements with his creditors.

Thanks Knox for his attention to his son-in-law Mr. John Inman (see GLC02437.03287) and for "delivering [him] from Prison & perhaps Death." Inman arrived last night and was escorted home by General [John] Crane, and is "now under the care of an able Physician god grant he may be returned to his right mind." Is aware that Inman made a "very great sacrifice of property" in his New York business, and will see to it that "strict justice" be granted to Inman's creditors, who had him confined for debt and then allowed for his liberation. Will see to it that they receive the money owed them.

Asks for Hamilton's help if he is traveling to Albany. Is a purchaser, with Hamilton and others, of lands around the St. Lawrence River, the patents for which lands have been taken out of the Land Office in the name of Alexander Macomb. Aside from lands purchased by the state, certain portions of the land picked by a group led by General [Philip] Schuyler were to be paid for by Knox and several others. Would like Hamilton to determine how much Knox needs to pay and to whom he should direct the payment.

States that Hart is to supply Knox's stable with 12 tons of hay from the date of this document to 1 April 1792. Hay to be weighed at Knox's stable. Knox is to pay 3 pounds, 17 shillings, and sixpence in Pennsylvania currency, including the cartage.

In this very personal letter from Hamilton to Knox, Hamilton says, "My judgment tells, I ought to be silent on a certain subject-but my heart advises otherwise and my heart has always been the Master of my Judgment." He continues, "Believe me, I have felt much pain at the idea that any circumstances personal to me should have deprived the public of your services...." Hamilton insists he must remain silent as to his opinion about this unspecified matter.
