Wells was later captured, imprisoned at Andersonville, and on the Sultana when it exploded, subjects covered in manuscript written in 1880s (includes typed transcript). The diary is approximately 106 pages and spans over the year 1863.

Cushing enlisted in June 1861 in the 1st Rhode Island Artillery, and was promoted to the 4th U.S. Army Light Artillery in November 1861. In the letter of 19 December 1862, he discusses his experiences on the march with his troops. Key battle material relating to the Chattanooga Campaign appears in letters dated 21 and 28 September, 10 and 14 October, and 22 November 1863. Letter from 28 September also contains a drawing showing artillery positions at Chickamauga.
