Title: Pontoon bridge across James River

A print of a photograph of boats in a river. Over a dozen boats can be seen. The titular pontoon bridge can be seen stretching across the horizon. Penciled below the image is: "Pontoon bridge across the James River over which the army of the Potomac passed on it [sic] way to Richmond, Va." The section of the River is likely that 'below' Richmond between the city and Hampton Roads. Written note on verso: "the ironclad in far right of photograph is the Monitor "Atlanta" (in handwriting of F.H. Meserve).

One photograph of a gunboat known as the Monitor Sangus dated 1864. Taken by Egbert Guy Fowx. The title is taken from the inscription on the recto. The image shows "Saginaw," a Federal steamer, and "Sangus," a monitor [ironclad], on the James River. The hull of "Sangus" appears to be painted white, and the canvas has been strung up over the deck to provide shelter from the elements. Army camp tents can be seen in the background along the opposite bank of the river.

Title taken from inscription on recto. Troops are lined up for inspection in the distance. They face the camp, which is laid out in company rows. The enlisted men's tents are on the right, and officers' tents can be seen running perpendicular to these. There are also two rows of small open ovens with chimneys where small groups of soldiers (or "messes") prepare their own meals. The camp appears to be in an orchard of some kind--fruit trees visible in between the tents.

A print of a photograph of the USS Louisville, a City-class ironclad gunboat laid down in September of 1861. Many sailors and/or officers can be see standing on the deck, the Louisville had a crew of 251. Inscription on recto: "Louisville iron clad gun boat 12 guns. Mississippi Squadron, 1864." The Louisville actually had at 14 guns at any point during the war, including all of 1864. Vicksburg looms in the backgorund. Note this image has been mounted over an oval photograph of a soldier.

A print of a photograph of the Old Courthouse of Warren County, in Vicksburg, MS. Title taken from inscription on recto. A group of emancipated enslaved people are gathered near a brick structure to the left of the court house. Union soldiers, cavalry, and an artillery gun can be seen surrounding the court house. Stamp of "French & Co., photographers, Vicksburg, Miss." on recto. Despite the claims of the title, there is very little damage present on the building itself. The building is still standing as of 2017 and is preserved as a museum.

A print of a photograph of a three-story building in Vicksburg, MS. The Mississippi River can be seen in the background beyond the rest of the city. Title taken from inscription on recto. The building was constructed in 1853 and used as a hospital until 1873 (taken over by the Marines after the end of the siege in 1863). Demolished in 1892. The second line of a small sign in the middle of the image appears to read "Signal Corps." A road and a long horse rail [fence] are in the foreground of the image, while what appears to be an orchard stands in the background. Graphite inscription on verso: "Def[enses] of Wash[ington]. Gardner XXX 732." Print is unmounted. The US Army Signal Corps was established on March 3rd, 1863 so the photograph has to date from after that.
