He has not heard news of the expedition, but can still hear firing in the direction of Petersburg, Virginia. He states that if Butler or Smith require the 2nd Corps, they should send notice to General Winfield Scott Hancock under cover to General John Gibbon. Fair copy of the act passed by the New Jersey House of Representatives near the beginning of the French and Indian War. Passed with some amendments, the act was meant to raise revenue for expenses during the French and Indian War. The bills authorized seemed to have been revised prior to their actual issue. There are many textual corrections in the document. Lawrence was the Speaker of the House of the New Jersey Assembly.

Dated the "Last Tuesday of August." Names penned by Paine, including that of Benjamin Edes, the printer of the June 18, 1776 Massachusetts issue, the one probably forged.

It calls any attempts to negotiate separately "revolutionary." Claims they are fighting the war for the "natural and inalienable right claimed by them in the revolution of '76." The letter has penciled underscorings and water stains on last page. The letter was written in a camp near Vicksburg.
