Title: St. Francis Medal

One St. Francis Medal owned by Robert L. Stone. The medal was carried by Stone on all of his bombing missions during World War II. During training at March Field, Bob and a fellow cadet drove to the Mission Inn in Riverside, California there was an international shrine of the birdmen. Once there they received the St. Francis medals. The medal is worn along the edges and on the rear as a result of Bob rubbing and carrying the medal on every mission and every airplane flight after returning home.

One document issued by the American Red Cross, dated January 21, 1942. The document is entitled "Statement of Policy Regarding Negro Blood Donors." Outlines a new policy that facilities are now "prepared here-after to accept blood donations from colored as well as white persons." The blood will be "processed separately so that those receiving transfusions may be given plasma from blood of their own race." The policy was issued by the Chairman of the American Red Cross and the Surgeons General of the Army and the Navy and approved by the Secretaries of War and the Navy.

Addressed to "Dad + Bee." He's happy he could get one last call in before he ships out. The train trip was "swell" and the officers had drawing rooms. This was their last night out before they sail. He's hoping he'll have mail waiting at his new address. The letter is dated "Friday Nite." "Letters in a Box" notes the letter was written on June 30, 1944.
