Reports on various events related to the 19 April 1861 Baltimore Riot, during which secessionists attacked Union soldiers passing through the city. Discusses a town meeting held in Calais' Horton's Hall, where "The vast assemblage was animated by one sentiment and that a determination to sustain the Government in the present emergency." States that citizens of Cockeysville, Maryland reported that Baltimore "police and soldiers came up to burn the bridges to the Pennsylvania line" in order to prevent the passage of Union troops.

United States General-In-Chief Scott relates orders received from President Abraham Lincoln to General Butler, Brigadier General of Militia, regarding the Legislature of Maryland scheduled to assemble at Annapolis. Hoping to prevent further uprising following the 19 April 1861 Baltimore Riot, Lincoln orders that if the Legislature arms their people against the United States, Butler must "adopt the most prompt and efficient means to counteract, even if necessary to the bombardment of their cities- and in the extremest necessity suspension of the writ of habeas corpus."

Partially printed order directing Secretary of State William H. Seward to affix the seal to a proclamation recommending the celebration of Washington's birthday. On February 19, 1862 Lincoln issued an official proclamation recommending that the people of the United States assemble in their "customary places of meeting for public solemnities" on February 22 in honor of Washington's birthday. One black and white full length seated engraving and one bust engraving of Lincoln included. One black and white full length seated engraving of George Washington also included.

Also requesting the facts of the cases. Signed twice (the second time on a postscript). Lincoln stays the execution for two privates, one whose name Lincoln can't remember in the 1st Regiment NJ Vols., and one of Private Daniel Sullivan in the 13th Mass. Sullivan had been sentenced to be shot for desertion. The other man has not been definitively identified but may be Daniel Drights (or Driggets) (1st NJ, convicted of desertion 17 Sept. 1863).

From a soldier detailing the little-known Confederate expedition to capture New Mexico Territory. Appears to be two letters printed in a Southern newspaper. Written by H.D. Donald to R.V. Cook at Soloro which is "30 miles above Ft. Craigg." In first letter from 27 February writes from a hospital bed. Says they were in a "great battle" on 21 February 1862 in the valley of the Rio Grande, near Val Verde. Mentions that his captain led a charge against a battery of cannon and carried the day. Trenholm of Charleston, South Carolina and that Alexander Robertson is the ship's master. The schooner has measurements of: 59 feet 4 inches in length, 26 feet 10 inches in breadth, and 6 feet 4 inches in depth. She weighs 65 tons. Signed in the margin by Robert Tyler, W.F. Consists of an unsigned acrostic poem with the name "BF Butler" as the basis. An attack against General Benjamin F. Butler [possibly for his "women around town" order while he was administering New Orleans]. The notorious declaration was issued on 15 May 1862 said if any woman should insult or show contempt for any officer or soldier of the United States, she shall be regarded and shall be held liable to be treated as a "woman of the town plying her avocation", i.e., a prostitute. Written by A. W. Miller (possibly by the Rev. Arnold W. Miller, though most of Arnold Miller's sermons and writings were published in South Carolina). Justifies slavery through Christianity: "Thus, the relation of slavery will ever continue in the world, rendered perpetual by Christianity, because it points to Christ, who took upon Him the form of a slave... The Christianity of the Old Testament did not condemn it, neither does the Christianity of the New."
