Beckett. 8vo. Franklin argues for the retention of Canada to safeguard the British colonies on the mainland, rather than more wealthy lands like Guadaloupe. Franklin's "Observations on the Increase of Mankind" first mentioned the doubling of America's population that Thomas Malthus used for his "Essay on Population." States that in 1921, "...there were 72 instances in which officers of the law prevented lynchings. Of these 8 were in Northern States and 64 were in Southern States. In 1920 there were 56 such instances, 46 in Southern and 10 in Northern States. In 66 of the cases, the prisoners were removed, or the guards were augmented, or other precautions taken. Says "Commanding Officers will promptly report to this office the execution of General Orders No. 13, of April 30, 1861, from the War Department, requiring Officers of the army 'to take and subscribe anew the oath of allegiance to the United States of America.' Special mention will be made of any failure to comply with the requirements of the Orders."

A response to Anthony's accusation in her History of Woman Suffrage that Robert E. Lee banished his youngest daughter, Annie Carter Lee (1839-1862) during the Civil War because of her Unionist sentiments. The author explains that Lee protected his daughter by sending her away and did not bring her body home for burial as a tribute to the people who took care of her.
