McParlin transcribes in his own hand the text of the letter and asks that this serve as a substitute so that he can get the original back. He asked because he considered the letter, which commends his service in the Civil War, more valuable to himself and his family since Grant had recently died. There is text loss where the year was written and elsewhere along the edges of the paper.
