S. politics (from 1845 - 1860), including his time in the House of Representatives and Senate, his service in the Mexican War, and as Secretary of War. He also tells Alfriend of a few written sources he might check but notes: "No other sources of information occur to me at this time, as I suppose the Archives of the Late Conf[ederate] Gov[ernmen]t would not be accessible to you."

He adds: "I hope the time will come when talents, character, refinement education and excellence of disposition will be more prized than dry goods. The masses of the people are becoming educated and cannot worship finery much longer."

Miss Alfriend donated her uncle's (Frank Alfriend) Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity pin to William and Mary College. Burwell, a current member of the fraternity writes for information about Frank Alfriend, so he may write an article for the S.A.E. Record. He states that all the records for the early members were destroyed. The only information he could find was in a 1918 catalogue of members: Frank Heath Alfriend. A.M. 1860; Former Editor, "Southern Literary Messenger;" Journalist; Author, "Life of Jefferson Davis." He asks for a photograph and a résumé of Alfriend's life.
