We have no idea of how long we will be in Viet Nam. I don't really care how long we're there just so I get to see Chicago again."

There are also mentions of the anniversary of President Washington's Birthday, and the text of the proclamation given by President Lincoln to celebrate Washington's birth. (see GLC06038) An article on the fourth page laments the death of Willie Lincoln. On the last page of the newspaper there is an article concerning Nathaniel Gordon's accused crime of international slave trade and his execution.

A memorandum entitled, "The Negro Working Population and National Recovery," by the National Urban League for Social Service Among Negroes dated January 4, 1937. The item was prepared and submitted to President Franklin D. Roosevelt to review how African Americans were not being successfully included in the New Deal. The league was concerned by low pay, job availability, reduced to the least desirable positions, prejudice by white employers, and civil rights not abided by public officials. Also provides suggestion to allow African Americans to be given higher wages.

He wrote to people eminent in their professional fields for advice he could share with his students at the Senior High School of Trenton, New Jersey. He then published these letters in this book after gaining permission from their authors. Of the 324 letters, some notable names are; Franklin D. Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, W.E.B. Dubois, and Harry Houdini.
