Ridgway responding to Hunt's request for favorite quotations. The first quotation is Book of Joshua 1:5. The second quotation can be found on the base of the monument to the Scottish-American soldier dead of World War I. He describes the monument in great detail, including the fact that the soldier gazes upon Edinburgh Castle. He states that he carried the quotation in his wallet along with a photograph of Edinburgh Castle, but was not able to visit the monument until he relinquished his post as Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO.

Roosevelt inscribed this printed edition of his "Open Letter" sent to newspapers to Edward E. Swadener. Roosevelt argues that religious belief should not be a litmus test for candidates, claiming that political history shows people of certain faiths representing constituents with beliefs differing from their own. He dwells at length upon the anti-Catholic attacks on Taft during the last presidential election because of his supposed Catholic sympathies. He argues for tolerance.

Rubottom responds to a letter from Fulton written during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Rubottom shares a concern about the world and the future. He notes that all three of his children are October babies and during the holidays the family spent a lot of time discussing world and human problems. He writes that man should attempt to "develop deeper spiritual understanding and recognize man's proper relationship in God's scheme" in order to be better prepared to address the world's problems.

Written by one of Rush's secretaries. Rush thanks Beck for the copy of the sermon, "On the Errors of Ultraism in Morals and Religion," Beck sent to him through Mr. Williams. The sermon was preached at Newport the previous summer. He briefly praises the sermon. The bottom half of the page has a newspaper clipping glued to it that has no apparent connection to the content of the letter.

Ruskin does not entertain Furnivall's many questions concerning the Authority of Scripture, stating: "If the Bible does not speak plain English enough to define the articles of saving faith -- burn it, and write another -- but don't talk of Interpreting it."

Santayana notes their similar religious background but claims to have never left the Catholic church because he never had a sense of being in it, although he does "think in its terms." He discusses Schaffer's need to explain "our existence" beyond the merely scientific. Santayana views looking for such an explanation as absurd. He concludes: "A moral solution arrived at prudently is a help in life, but, it need not be a metaphysical one."
