Major Lane, having offered to carry General Benjamin Lincoln's dispatches to Congress, says he is ready to depart. Says it is his intention to return to Charlestown as soon as possible. Says he has no business in the north and will return quickly. Appears there was an issue with Lane's servants. Says the ship "Betsy" was captured by American privateers and brought to Philadelphia. Since his servant papers were on that ship he hopes to clear up this situation. Says he was thankful that Lincoln brought it up privately. Written one week before the fall of Savannah, Georgia.

Countersigned by Israel Chapin. Charges Goodwin with forgery and counterfeiting. Endorsement signed by John Tucker as clerk and dated September term, 1787 states that Goodwin pleaded not guilty. He was convicted and sentenced to stand in the pillory at Springfield for one hour, and another hour in the pillory at North Hampton. Written as Massachusetts Attorney General.

Apparently a telegram. Major General Banks, commander of the Department of the Gulf, sends word to Major General Grant, commander of the Department of the Tennessee, to announce the capture of Port Hudson, Louisiana. This letter marks the advent of unfettered Union control of the Mississippi River. The Vicksburg garrison had surrendered to Grant on July 4, four days prior to this note.

Written by Heath as Major General in Continental Army from his hometown of Roxbury to an unknown council. Heath was in charge of the Convention Army, which consisted of the British prisoners of war from the Saratoga campaign. After surrendering in October 1777, they were marched through Albany to Boston, where they remained until February 1779, when they were marched to Virginia. This letter deals with barracks for those prisoners of war at Rutland, Massachusetts. Hayes writes as Lieutenant Colonel of the 23rd Regiment of Ohio Volunteers to Scammon, his superior, as commander of the 1st Brigade. States that he cannot get enough information about mill privileges and navigation on the New River. "At Richmond there is a fall of 8 to 12 feet - at other points there are falls which have always been Supposed to prevent all navigation, but 'impossible' is a hard word. I wouldn't speak it on my meagre information. I can say very difficult and dangerous."
