Says Knox is far from doing her justice. Tells him he "must be convinced how much I have sacrificed, to come to such an amical settlement." Hopes the paperwork will not slow the settlement down. Says "all what I ask is, to be able to give Surety to my acquirors, this is what I take to heart, I rather would risk my life, than to engage them in an operation which would be ruinous to them." Hopes no new articles will be inserted in their agreement, as the French settlers have spent everything they have to settle in America. Wants her countrymen to have an asylum of peace.

Knox believes that Francis must change his behavior sincerely, but as for now he had "no moral sense: wrong and right are the same to him." Knox addresses his letter to "Gentlemen" and explains that working to improve Penobscot Bay and rivers has left him with considerable debt reaching $8,000 "due to Mr. Thorndike and six thousand dollars to another Gentleman his associate." Knox has arranged a plan of payment that includes Henry Jackson and Benjamin Lincoln endorsing Knox's notes. Knox goes on to describe his lands and how rapidly the population is increasing in the area.
