This print of a sketch is based on A.J. Riddle's photograph of the southeast view of Andersonville Prison. With Century Co. stamp and various inscriptions. Caption on verso reads "photographed from the Branch in summer of 1864. Sink or trough in foreground, and beyond are rotten tents, shanties, or huts, in an out of which are prisoners. Clothing is thrown over the tents. In the distance runs the south line of stockades, surrounded by sentry stands and sentries at regular distances. Portrait of General Albert Ordway in dress uniform with four medals. Based on the uniform, the photograph appears to have been taken during Ordway's time as the Commanding General of the District of Columbia National Guard. Ordway became Commanding General in 1887 and continued in that role until his death in 1897. There is some discoloration at the bottom of the photograph, as well as some along the edges. Civil War lithograph "representing Gen. Palmer's Division, Col. Scribner's and Col. Relates his tumultuous travels to brother-in-law Paige en route to New York while on board the ship, "The Fanny." Informs that he acquired a team of horses to continue by land to New Haven, Connecticut, and attests to his family's well-being, stating that the worst they experienced was seasickness. Instructs Paige to inform Mr. Blake (possibly George Blake, a family friend in Boston) of the family's location. Document written at eight o'clock. Year added in pencil at a later date.

Written at Camp Zanesville to his wife. Talks of arrival at Camp Zanesville via steam boat ("smoke boat.") His goods were lost in shipping between home and the camp. Finally, tells his wife if she sends $100 quickly, he could come home, as he won't be mustered in for another week or so. First page is quite faded. Stationery shows an image of the American flag and reads "Long may it wave."

Written at Camp Dennison to his wife. Reports he is finally paid $62.50. Expects to move soon, though "grape vine dispaches," or camp rumors, are unreliable as to where. Mentions some soldiers' receiving packages from home. Laments vice in camp, commenting "I have heard profanity in its worst form I have seen allmost every form of vice and its affects." Finally, reacts to news of an incident in Noble County, Ohio (the Hoskinville Rebellion) in which the "rattle snakes," or "butternuts," as Wood calls them, i.e. Southern sympathizers demonstrate opposition to war. Written from London, Kentucky to his wife. Describes raids in Tennessee and Virginia, destroying railroads, burning bridges, tearing down telegraph wires. Also describes the rainy weather. Expresses concern because he sent a dollar in a letter, but does not trust the mail. Tells of the soldiers' dismay at Robert E. Lee's successes, but expects victory will come when they're on the "brink of despair." Expresses fatigue from the harsh treatment and difficult duty he endures.
