The front page of this issue is a drawing of the commanding officers at Fort Sumter, less than a month before an attack on the fort would begin the hostilities of the Civil War. The news focuses on the Union forts that have already been turned over to the South and on Sumter, where a stalemate is underway. There is an illustration of a steam boat. The issue also contains a number of chapters from Charles Dickens's "Great Expectations" in their earliest American publication. The story is accompanied by a number of illustrations by John McLenan.

Appears to be Kingston's cypher to communicate with Sir Henry Clinton in code. "Sir Henry Clinton" is written in pen at the top of one side, along with the word "Top" as a direction of how to place the cypher. There are 4 cut outs. When placed over a coded letter of the same size the cut outs provide a window for the message. There are pencil lines extending from the cut outs as well, which appear to be measurement lines for the actual cut outs.

Title: Map of the Frontiers of the Northern Colonies with the Boundary Line established Between them and the Indians at the Treaty held by S. Will Johnson at Ft. Stanwix in Novr. 1768.

This document is a map that shows the Colonies of New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and the Ohio Valley Territory to the west of them. The map contains corrections and improvements from the Evans Map made by Guy Johnson, who was a British deputy agent to the Indians. It was engraved and printer by Gavit & Duthie, who work in Albany, New York. The map is detailed only to the extent that it tracks major river sna streams, with some indication of mountainous regions. Date range is inferred from dated letter also included in the collection.

Printed on the bottom left corner is the signature of John Romeyn Brodhead, an agent of the State of New York hired to procure and transcribe documents in Europe. Signed by P.H. Loffelt, who copied this document for Brodhead in the Hague, and by J.C. de Jorge, an archivist. Uses the names of Native American tribes to designate different areas of the New Netherlands. Brodhead's notations indicate that this map could have possibly been from the Octroy of the States General from 11 October 1614, or from the written report of Dutch Captain Cornelis Hendrickson, who explored the Delaware River in…

Urges the state's federal congressmen (which included Hobart) to help obtain remuneration for Massachusetts for costs incurred for the "defence and protection of our common country," probably referring to the War of 1812.

Resolution submitted by Pickman and copy issued by the Secretary of the Commonwealth, Alden Bradford. The state was seeking $11,000 remuneration for defense expenses from "the late war," probably the War of 1812. The date refers to its approval by the state legislature. Sent with a circular letter discussing the resolution (see GLC06313.134).
