Title: [Extract of a letter of support for the Constitution from a Virginian to a friend in Portsmouth, New Hampshire]

Recognizes that human political institutions are not perfect, and describes the proposed Constitution as "the result of mutual concession and accommodation" that does not "come fully up to the views of any one." He praises the Constitution as "admirably calculated to promote and secure the felicity of mankind in a State of civil society." He expects it to be ratified in Virginia and was disappointed that New Hampshire did not immediately adopt it, but hopes it will in the future.

He complains: "[B]oth the [Supreme] Court & Bar could not put a just Construction of the Law, they acknowledged it to be ambiguous.... Cannot Congress explain the meaning or design of their laws." He asks "Cannot & ought not Congress to pass an Act forbidding any matters which were determined & finally settled in the State Courts prior to the Federal Constitution[?]"

In florid prose, Peabody appeals to Langdon's patriotism in order to enlist his support for the War of 1812."Our enemies are in our bosom." Recalls their service in the revolutionary war and seeks Langdon's attendance at an assembly to organize support for the federal government. In a postscript, comments on the Essex Junta's plans to lead New Hampshire and Vermont to secede from the Union and attempt to establish an eastern confederacy. Peabody was a New Hampshire legislator. Langdon had served as the state's governor.

The deed from Niles Smith appears on p. 2-3, and specifies the location of the land and indicates that Branch paid Smith $1,000 for it. Signed by Smith on p. 3 and witnessed by Henry Millard, E. Harris, and J.G. Welsh Meyer.

Records the sale of land from Alexander McDonald to N. Hobbs and Caldwell. McDonald acquired the land from the late John Shirly, a soldier in the army of the Republic of Texas who was, like other soldiers involved in the Texas Revolution, given a land grant for his service. On the verso is a note indicating that Caldwell had Certificate No. 1664, attesting to W.M Berryhill's land grant of 960 acres for his service, and would have it delivered to Hobbs. Both sides witnessed by Peter Hansborough Bell, then an assistant adjutant general Texas army.

Partially printed document in which George Trembley of New Orleans, Louisiana, attests to selling 640 acres of Texas land to Edward T. Jackson for $325. The land had originally been granted to John Miller for service in the Texas Revolution and sold by him to Jackson on 12 December 1837. Signed by Trembley on the bottom and witnessed by Ant. Doriscourt and A. Austin. The certification of the sale by Bryan, acting as consul for the Republic of Texas, for the port of New Orleans, State of Louisiana, appears on the verso.

Signed by Bunton, a member of the Texas House of Representatives, as chairman of the Committee of Investigation. Also signed and approved by John M. Hansford, the Speaker of the House.
