Former owner claims the photographer may be Tomas Roche. Taken from a slightly different angle than Gardner's famous 6 April 1865 panoramic photograph which shows the destruction of Richmond. Visible in the distance are the Spotswood Hotel [as indicated by a large banner on the outside of the building], the capitol building, and five church steeples. The foreground includes a barren hill sloping into well kept buildings, most of which are residential. A salt print of a photographic portrait of a man identified as Maj. Sidell. Heavily touched-up by Brady studio artists. Posibly an original painting and not a photograph. Research brings up a William Henry Sidell, born 1810 in New York, NY. Sidell graduated from West Point in 1833, and was comissioned Major and put in charge of the 15th Infantry Regiment upon the start of the Civil War in 1861. Promoted to Liutenant Colonel at some point, then full bird in 1863. As shoulder straps of Maj. and Lt. Col. are the same except for coloration, photograph can be placed between 1861 and 1863. A salt print of a photographic portrait of Edward D. Baker. With the following note: "Given to me by Father 2/10/1955 in his store room as we examined the negatives together. This is a Brady photograph which had been extensively touched up by a Brady artist, for re-photographing." Edward D. Baker was a senator from Oregon and an old friend of Lincoln's. He helped to raise a regiment and then led it to destruction at Ball's Bluff on 21 October 1861. He was killed in battle and made into a martyr for the nation. A print of a photograph of a two-story brick building. Union officers posed on horses in front of Falls Church, VA where George Washington once worshipped. It was a favorite tourist site for soldiers passing through. On the inside of the church's walls, soldiers often wrote down their names and units. It became a catalogue of sorts for Union regiments passing by. Title from graphite inscription below photograph: "Falles [sic] Church in va." "Falls Church" is written below that. Print is in an oval shape on a rectangular sheet of albumen.
