General Gorman requests that Stanton, Secretary of War, transfer him to a command in the West. Writes, "I have served in the 'Army of the Potomac' since May 1861. I have been engaged in nearly all the battles & expeditions of that portion of the Army. I was born, raised & educated in the West, All my social ties are there, All my private interests are there, All my early military experience was there & with those people, except during this rebellion."
