Writes to his cousin from camp near Louisville. Expects to go down the Tennessee River very soon but has been detained due to ice in the river. Informs him that six companies left yesterday. Comments his brother Joseph "has a great deal to say about our country becoming bankrupt, the suffering of widows and orphans and the unnecessary destruction of life, all for the abolition of slavery." Says he doesn't have much faith in the peace rumors, "the Rebel Army at Richmond will have to be subdued before the Rebel authorities are willing to come back into the Union."

Expresses relief he is still in Memphis. Reports his regiment is suffering, with little to no food. Says the Baptist meeting is over and they "immersed" seventeen people. Comments she witnessed the immersion and "...became disgusted and went home thinking I had seen enough for one day." Mentions that Grier is at a party, but she intends to limit his socializing in the future. States she is glad that religion comforts him in all his trials.

Comments the papers are filled with peace rumors, but he is not optimistic.

Comments on news of a friend's new baby, adding that an officer he works with just had a baby. Mentions his satisfactory dinner of roast beef, mutton, pork, potatoes and sauerkraut. Continued on December 19th. Wishes his family a happy new year. Describes holiday festivities between the soldiers and officers.

Writes concerning the purchase of horses for the troops. States "in consequence of no person's appearing at Fort Washinton on the part of the Contractors to make provision for the transportation of the flour & for the Army, I had been obliged to take it upon myslef, and had ordered...an Agent, to provide the horses and carriages that would be necessary." Appeares to be a mix-up in ordering horses, so asks Lexington to "suspend your purchases of horses until you hear again." Noted as a copy. Watermarked "Watt & C Patent Copyin[g]." Letterpress copy.

Apparently a bled-through copy of GLC02437.07203. Knox acknowledges that he "received your note respecting Francis Flucker and the explanations of his conduct by McEllery." Knox believes that Francis must change his behavior sincerely, but as for now he had "no moral sense: wrong and right are the same to him." He has run away from school, and until he gets his act together, Knox insists that Knox is not "responsible either for his conduct or expences."

Jackson requests that Knox attest that Jackson in the winter of 1792-1793 "went to New York at the joint instance of Mr. Bingham and yourself and negociated the transfer of Mr. Duer's right to preemtion of said lands." The lands were those purchased in Maine. Jackson then "accompanied Mr. Bringham to Boston and assisted him to transact the business of the said concern with the Committee of the Commonwealth, it was not your meaning that those service were to be compensated by an allowance of the residuary profits on the proportion of One hundred thousand acres of said lands."

Mortgage agreement with General Knox "and the whole of Township No. 2 in the First Range North of the Waldo Patent and of 7600 acres adjoining to the aforesaid Township, such part of it lying in Hamden..." On the docket, Knox notes "Mr. Dane's responsible to me that he shall obtain a paper being obligation from Thorndike and Pickman-that upon my paying them a sum not less than 7500 Dollars they shall release a proportional part of the mortgaged Lands."
