Gardner photograph. Inscription on verso: "XXIV" "338." It also identifies the location as "Petersbrug," however in the Photogrpahic History of the Civil War, Vol 2, p. 618, the scene is identified as Brandy Station. Evidence suggests Brandy Station is the correct location. Camp of A-frame tents, some with wooden doors and brick chimneys. Construction of tents suggests a winter camp. Camp is located in a clearing surrounded by trees. Trees in the foreground of the photograph have been cut down. A print of a photograph of a building with the sign "Government Bakery." The bakers have come out and pose mostly in front of the bakery. Since the armies in the field baked their own bread mostly, this bakery serviced only those troops around the capital. Washington became a major center for army services during the war. Numerous government repair shops and support facilities [some massive in size] employing hundreds of skilled and unskilled workers were established to keep the armies running. Three officers stand on top of the rampart between the guns. Another group of men lounge on the ground just below the rampart, next to a stand of munition [spherical shells or solid shots]. erso notations: "XXIII" "692" Pencil note on back of mat attributes this image to Gardner and suggests a Century Co. provenance, however William M. Smith is credited for this photograph by the Library of Congress.

A print of a phofotograph of Colonel Benjamin F. Fisher and his assistants standing outside the Signal Corps headquarters located at 1816 F St., NW Avenue at Madison Place NW Washington, D.C. The building has a small sign that reads "Office of the Signal Officer of the Army." Fisher, born 1834, entered the military in 1861 and was attached to the Signal Corps. Captured by Confederate forces in 1863, escaped jail with 109 other Union prisoners in 1864. He was placed in command of the corps on December 26th, 1864. "Totten" painted across the top of the entrance. Six Union artillerymen stand between the guns and the gate. The insignia on the forage caps of some of the men indicate Co. D of the 3rd Mass. Philip May leased the building at 75 High St. (now 1254 Wisconsin Ave., N.W.) for his bakery from 1853 to 1866. Twenty Union officers are standing or seated on or near the first-floor porch of the building. It has a porch on the second floor as well. A print of a photograph of the officers of the 3rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Heavy Artillery at Fort Totten. There are seven men present, none of them general officers. The door to the house is open revealing some of the interior of the house including the wallpaper and a piece of furniture. Note the screen netting on the open windows. Inscription on verso "Gardner 261." It has been suggested that this is a rare view of the inside of officers quarters.
