Encloses a required certificate from his surgeon (not included). Writes, "On the 29th of July 1863 I was ordered to report for medical treatment & surgeon R. O. Abbott USA at Washington, upon whose certificate of disability I had leave of absence for fifteen days dated Aug 4th 1863." Is incapable of joining his regiment.

This collection of letters was written while John B. Moore taught school in Louisiana and Alabama. Eighteen letters are from John to his sister Mary Moore (2-3, 6-7, 9-11, 15-18, 20-22, 25-27, 29); three letters have notes to both Mary and brother Richard Moore on the same letter (2, 16, 18). Other correspondence involves brother Robert E. Moore (2, 4, 8, 12, 13, 14, 23, 28), and father Garrett Moore (19, 24), with two letters from Irish cousins (12, 14). Three quarter length standing portrait of Surgeon General Moore in dress uniform. With rubber stamp on verso, "C.M. Bell. 463 & 465 Penna. Ave. Washington, D.C." Moore wears his dress uniform complete with epaulets, belt buckle, sash, dress belt, and sword. See GLC04916.06 for Moore's epaulets and belt buckle. Moore had been an important army physician during the Civil War and was made Surgeon General in 1886. He served in that role until his retirement in 1890.

To Estes as Acting Assistant Adjutant General, 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 5th Corps, Army of the Potomac.

Kelly, Acting Assistant Adjutant General.

Resigns as Colonel of the 44th Regiment, New York Volunteers to accept the appointment.

The correspondence of David V. R. Smith, a Private in the 12th New Jersey Volunteers, includes 59 war-date letters written to his wife, Elizabeth, and his son, Charles Carroll, from Elmer, Salem Co., NJ. Smith's regiment served mostly as pickets and guards. His letters detailed this constant and fatiguing duty. However, he did see battle in two major campaigns: Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. Smith suffered from chronically swollen and painful legs which eventually killed him. His leg condition sent him to the hospital in August 1863 where he died on October 10, 1863 from his illness.…

The George W. Buntly collection of Civil War correspondence is primarily composed of letters written by Confederate infantryman Buntly to his brothers, William and Jacob.
