States that after a delay by the Treasury Department, he has obtained an order requiring "the district attorney to attend to the taking of the depositions" regarding the loss of money on board a steamboat. An audit by Mr. Elliott may resolve the matter without further action by Congress, but should a law be necessary, Gordon should forward "the depositions as soon as practicable." William Rufus de Vane King was a former representative from North Carolina, sitting senator from Alabama, and future (short-lived) vice president of the United States under Franklin Pierce.

Quotes William Cowper to describe him. Writes that her husband's hands hurt from the cold and from previous letter writing and that he sends his greetings. In GLC02852, John Adams uses "Colman" instead of "Coleman."

Jackson agrees to pay the debt that his adopted son, Andrew Jackson Jr., owes on furniture that he had purchased two years earlier. Jackson adopted his son as an infant from his wife's brother and sister-in-law, Severn and Elizabeth Rucker. His high hopes for Andrew Jackson Jr. were never realized, and Jackson spent much of his last decade paying off debts for his son, as in this letter.
