Writes that William "is exceedingly well, but I think his spirits are at times too much elevated, however when he gets settled in Ireland, I much hope he will go on in a regular way, and be in a happy situation." Says he could not accept William's "draft of £190." Requests Knox settle his debt with Mr. [Samuel?] Ogden soon, or Webber will have to send someone to America to intervene. Knox remains indebted to Webber and therefore Webber cannot transfer credit from William's account to Henry's.

Received Wendell's letter of 27 April, which offered to sell Knox 2,500 acres of land in the Muscongus Patent (a portion of the Waldo Patent). Says he would not be unwilling to buy the land at a good price, but that it would be "improper" to do so. Tells Wendell that he should not feel "under the least engagement to me" and that he should get the best price he can for the land. Pencil note below docket says "Recd from Mrs. Husther(?) Nov. 6 1844."

Notes he has been silent because he could not speak with effect. Claims he has "perfect confidence" in [Samuel] Ogden's integrity and security, but his business arrangements have "retarded his payments." Has been assured that Ogden will settle the matter by the end of the year. With his knowledge of Ogden's situation, he believes that plan is feasible. Hopes that Webber's mind will soon be put at ease. Says he will get his payment in full plus 7 percent interest. Mentions that he is enclosing a bill for $1,000 or £225 for Ogden's debt to Webber.

Also discusses the compensation he deserves for his work and the possibility of Knox selling the island. A small portion of the letter is missing at the bottom causing minor text loss.

James Wendell claims to own about two thousand five hundred acres adjoining the Waldo patent which he wishes Knox to purchase. If he does so "on generous terms" John will give a piece of land in Portsmouth to the Flucker family, Knox's in-laws.

Orders a book for records. Post scripts indicate that he once bought magazines from Knox for William Billing of Sunderland, Massachusetts and that the record book was needed for the recently incorporated town of Leverett, Massachusetts. Montague later became a minute man, was at the Lexington Alarm, and fought under Ethan Allen at Ticonderoga. He was at Bunker Hill and with the army at Cambridge when Washington took command and promoted him to the rank of major.
