29 July 1805
Scales, William, fl. 1805
Autograph letter signed
Title: to Henry Knox
Writes that he did not pick a side during the war, and was against the war entirely. Now regrets that he is being made to suffer the repercussions of a war he did not support. Discusses importing clergy members from Britain, as well as belief in the supernatural in rural Maine. Explains his belief in religion. Apparently is recommending that Knox ensures that a new clergy member from Britain, a Mr. Chillea, enjoys the approval of local churchgoers before Knox finalizes his employment.
