Encloses instructions for Lieutenant Hall "which I shall thank you to hand to him." Says he will "be down as soon I feel well enough to do so." Addressed to Doubleday at Fort Hamilton. Written eight days after Fort Sumter fell. Two bust engravings of Robert Anderson incldued as collateral.

Blair informs Thomas, United States Adjutant General, "I hereby tender my resignation as a major Genl U. S. Vols to take effect in the 1st of August next. Under orders already received the 17th A.C. which I have the honor to command will be mustered out of service by the first of Augt. next and I desire to terminate my career as an officer with that of the command to which I have been so long attached." Grant, Commander-in-Chief of the United States Army, approves Blair's request with an autograph andorsement signed on verso.

General Buckner, commanding the District of Arkansas and West Louisiana, Trans-Mississippi Department, writes to Reynolds, Confederate Governor of Missouri. Advises Reynolds to move off of the main road. Docketed by Reynolds. Says"...Every thing here is uncertain. The Missourians are still true, but I doubt if they will move. I am tied here as yet, by duties from which I have no right to shrink." General Buford, Chief of Cavalry, Army of the Potomac, writes to Lieutenant Bacon, adjutant of the 5th New York Cavalry. Remarks, "I would cheerfully recommend your advancement- But fear my good word will have but little weight During your service with me I was much pleased with your manner, and became satisfied of your ability- I would like to see you promoted feeling confident that you can command the respect of your soldiers and win with them a proud name." General Canby replies to a note from Cist, in St. Louis, Missouri. Writes, "The date of my commission as Brig Genl. is March 31. 1862 and as Major General May 7. 1864." Written on Headquarters, Military Division of the West Mississippi stationery; this title has been struck, and Department of the Gulf has been written in its place. Crittenden, General of Kentucky Militia, writes to Magoffin, Governor of Kentucky. Asks Magoffin to accept an enclosed resignation (not included), noting hat Mr. Barr "cannot accept any office that would take him away from here." Lieutenant Colonel Emory reports his arrival to Thomas, United States Adjutant General. Writes, "Before the receipt of the authority from you to visit the rendezvous I had completed the organization of the companies... & prepared to move Hd. Qts of the Rgmt to Bladensburgh, and circumstances made it necessary to do so. I have therefore not visited the rendezvous... and request to do so..." Written near Corinth, Mississippi. Fagan, Colonel commanding the 1st Arkansas Regiment, writes to Ruggles, commanding the 2nd Division, Army of Mississippi. Relates that General Braxton Bragg, commander of 2nd Corps, Army of the Mississippi, ordered Fagan to move his regiment to join other regiments forming the 1st Brigade of Ruggles's division, and to assume command of the brigade. Orders reflect preparation for operations against Corinth. One bust engraving of Fagan included as collateral.

Volunteers, has been mustered out of service, and you being the next Field officer in the regular line for promotion, I beg to hope you will receive the appointment on account of your constant labors to promote the efficiency of your regiment and for the zeal and energy displayed in duties connected with this Brigade..." Johnston, Confederate General commanding Department 2, writes to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Recommends Captain V. Sheliha for an open position in the engineer corps (possibly referring to Prussian engineer Victor Von Scheliha). Docket includes the name of General Felix Kirk Zollicoffer, who had been killed 19 January 1862 at Mill Springs, Kentucky. Docket is dated 8 and 25 January. General Lovell writes to Kimmel, Assistant Adjutant General. Reports that the 1st Corps is divided into two divisions. General Lloyd Tilghman has been assigned command of the 1st Division, and General Albert Rust the 2nd. There are three brigades per division, and brigades of the 1st Division will be commanded by Colonels William Edwin Baldwin, A. Heiman (possibly Adolphus Heiman), and D. A. Russell. General John B. General Johnston and his men are advancing towards Decatur, Alabama, and will soon join with Beauregard. Johnston's plan was use the rails to get from Decatur to Corinth, Mississippi. General McClernand writes from headquarters, reserves of the Army of the Tennessee, in the field. Transmits a newspaper from Mobile (not present). Informs Grant, second-in-command, Department of the Mississippi, to pay particular attention to the remarks of Colonel Richards, commander of a detachment from the 1st Division of the reserves (Richards has written notes in pencil on the newspaper's margin). Discusses Richards's notes, which pertain to Confederate camp location. One bust engraving of McClernand included as collateral.

Written on the day on which he was mustered in as colonel of the 14th Illinois Infantry at Camp Duncan (near Jacksonville, Illinois) to Colonel Mather, Adjutant General. Says "In the reorganization of the regiment I found it necessary to discharge a large number of men who were either rejected by the mustering Officer of the General Government or were fairly entitled to be relieved from their engagement or without any sufficient cause refused to tender their services... General Reynolds returns papers relating to the 14th Regiment to Colonel Noble. Writes, "I would recommend the promotion of a Captain of the 14th to be Major of the 14th I have a high opinion of Adjutant Blinn, but giving him two grades in promotion at once would seem to slight meritorious Captains- I would not promote any Captain that has signed Wood's paper- On the whole, I go for Cap Coons" (possibly referring to Adjutant John P. Colonel Rousseau recommends the appointment of Bland Ballard as Judge of the United States for the District of Kentucky. Of Ballard, Rousseau writes, "Mr. Ballard is, in my Judgment, in every way, fitted for that Place. He is a fine lawyer- we have no better in Kentucky. His standing is in every respect throughout the state, good. He is honest & capable- and he is, besides, a true, inflinching, fearless, Union Man without 'ifs or Conditions.' States the amount of time served in the Navy and positions held. Complains that as first lieutenant of the vessel John Adams, he is "constantly on duty." Requests relief by a junior officer and transfer to a larger vessel. Requests an exchange with "Humphreys," who "has applied to be detached." Written aboard the U.S. Brig Porpoise. Smith, Edmund Kirby, 1824-1893

Title: to Braxton Bragg

Writes to Bragg in order to send him a copy of "a special order of the enemy, taken from the Louisville Journal of the 18th." A newspaper clipping of "Special Orders No. 21," is attached. The order is a Union order regarding the building of fortifications around Louisville, Kentucky. The order states that all residents near Louisville must report "the number of slaves they will furnish" to assist in building the works and gives Colonel Dent the power to "impress a sufficient number of laborers." The order was given by Union General Jeremiah Boyle.

Title: to General Henry Alexander Wise

General Smith writes to Wise, commander of forces at Chaffin's Bluff. Reports that George W. Randolph, Confederate Secretary of War, informed him "that a flag of truce steamer was signaled yesterday coming up the James river supposed to be bound for Aiken's landing." Instructs Smith to prepare the guard at Aiken's landing. Remarks, "The landing of irresponsible or unauthorized persons should be strictly guarded against, and precautions taken to prevent the enemy from obtaining information."
