William McKinley writes to Colorado senator, Edward Oliver Wolcott, regarding international bimetallism. Bimetallism is the use of silver and gold as a standard of currency. McKinley initially favored international bimetallism, but when the British rejected that system, he abandoned it and in 1900 approved the Gold Standard Act. Letter written on personal stationery. Handwritten letters from McKinley as President or President-elect are rare.

Boerum was Clerk of Kings County from 1750 until his death. In 1774 and 1775 he was a member of the Continental Congress. Signs with his mark.

He informs Major General Elzey, commander of the Department of Richmond, that during the raid, Union troops stole thirty cattle from William P. Taylor's farm. He discusses coordination with Colonel Tabb (possibly William B. Tabb) and Captain Wynn at locations such as Bush's Mill, N. He extensively praises his Chief Surgeon, Dr. Charles McMillan. Sherman shows concern for soldiers wounded in the Vicksburg campaign. He writes from camp before Vicksburg.

Had Congress been called in extra session after the surrender, affairs would have been arranged in a way that would have been, as promptly accepted as was the independence policy" of President Lincoln.
