Notation on first page: "Copy of a letter received Septr 30th 1812." "Be not astonished!! for alas! it is too true, that I am now addressing you as a Slave in Algiers . . . . I think that all differences will be adjusted between G[reat] B[ritain], & America, Should they not do not let me die a Slave in Algiers . . . .I steal the time after begging the paper to write this." Captain Smith's ship, the "Edwin" was captured the Algerians in 1812. Lear arranged to pay the ransom for his and his eleven crewmembers' freedom.

Also authored by Lou Henry Hoover. Translated from the first Latin edition of 1556 and published by the Mining Magazine, Salisbury House, London, England. Inscribed by Hoover to Edwin A. Elsbach. De Re Metallica or "On the Nature of Metals" was the standard text on mining for two centuries. Agricola reviewed everything then known about mining, including equipment and machinery, means of finding ores, methods of surveying and digging, assaying ores, smelting, mine administration, and occupational diseases of miners. It also contains descriptions of ores and of strata. Pages uncut.

Knight was Collector of the Customs of Marblehead, Massachusetts. Signed as Secretary of the Treasury.

Foster later served in the Tennessee house of representatives and the U.S. senate.

A copy of Wayne's statements charging the members of a Grand Jury in the Sixth Circuit Court in the Southern District of Georgia. Wayne does not specify what the cases before the Grand Jury will be, but says they may relate to slavery. The Grand Jury requested printed copies of Wayne's statements to review them in reference to the case before them. Also details the various laws of Congress related to the slave trade and its criminality. Printed by E. J. Purse.

Engraved and published by Tanner and printed by Rosner & Eskr. The defeat of the British at the Battle of Plattsburg thwarted Sir George Prevost's planned invasion of the United States through the Hudson Valley and strengthened the American bargaining position for peace in Ghent. The battle was one of the most decisive of the War of 1812.

Delivered in Representatives' Hall, Springfield, Illinois. Replies to Judge Stephen Douglas's speech two weeks earlier on the subject of Kansas, the Dred Scott decision, and Utah. Douglas had spoken in favor of the Dred Scott decision and Lincoln's response maintains that the decision was erroneous. This address would provide the logic (and language) Lincoln used again in many of the arguments in his famous "House Divided" speech a year later. Pages are uncut.
