Thomas, as well as the location of the enemy. He instructs McPherson to attack Atlanta with 20-pound Parrotts. Written in pencil on stationery: "Headquarters, Military Division of the Mississippi." Written two days before McPherson's death.

Letter says: "You wil inform Colonel Watson that he is to remain at Georgetown as Greens Army is before Camden, that he wil join Lord Cornwalis on his march if he posibly can get to him and if not he will wait at Georgetown til further orders." Jubal Anderson Early, a former lieutenant general in the Confederate Army, writes to former Confederate admiral and brigadier general Raphael Semmes regarding correspondence with a German who has created a flying machine that could be used to bombard northern cities. Says "...I have this day received an offer from a German who says he has invented a flying machine, to dedicate to the Southern Cause, which he says is not lost...he says we can bombard and destroy...Northern Cities with his flying machines. I will publish the letter as a fitting comment in all the fit Northern papers are raising…

A strong statement signed by eight Indians showing alarm over white settlers moving onto their land, forbidding it in the future, making illegitimate leases null and void, and voicing hopes to "live in Quietness among one another without giving any offense to one another. Jacob Skekit and Bartholomew Calvin sign in full, and six others signed with marks. Brotherton is now known as Indian Mills in Burlington County, in Southern N.J.

Statement sent to Joseph Saltar that describes meeting in which the Brotherton unanimously agreed to express their refusal to leave "our fine place in Jersey" in the face of white encroachment. Signed in full by Jacob Skekit and Bartholomew Calvin, and eighteen other Indians. Eighteen years earlier, the same group had expressed alarm over white settlers moving onto their land (see GLC00540.01). Brotherton, New Jersey is now known as Indian Mills in Burlington County, in Southern N.J.

Confederate Secretary of War Seddon writes to his wife about the Civil War and the Battle of Vicksburg. He states "I am in the greatest anxiety about Vicksburg- The Yankees I fear have taken Jackson- At last accounts they were only a few miles from it and our forces retiring- Vicksburg is cut off..." He mentions General Johnson (possibly General Joseph E. Johnston), commanding Confederate forces at Jackson, Mississippi with General John Gregg. He transmits a "Yankee paper" (not included).

Foster, a U.S. senator from Connecticut, discusses his views on reconstruction with Wakeman, a lawyer. Foster says that he would restrict the right to vote to those with "capacity and virtue," but that it would be "arbitrary, unjust, and tyrannical to make any discriminations…on account of color…" He writes extensively about the rights, especially voting rights, of the "negro," and he states "There is no more sense in talking of a man's natural right to vote, than there is in talking of his natural right to be the Chief Justice, or the President of the United States…It is dangerous to commit…

Wheeler, commanding Cavalry Corps in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida writes to Bragg, commander of the Department of North Carolina. Reports on an engagement against the troops of General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick near Big Buckhead Church, noting that General Felix Huston Robertson was severely wounded. Writes "The enemy fought stubbornly and a considerable number of them were killed. We stampeded and came very near capturing Kilpatrick twice but having a fast horse he escaped bare headed, leaving his hat in our hands..."…
