Cushing served as a U.S. congressman from Massachusetts (1835-1842) and as a delegate to the Democratic national convention, held in April 1860 at Charleston, South Carolina. Seymour had served as a U.S. congressman (1843-1844) and governor of Connecticut (1850-1853).

Dix, postmaster of the City of New York, declines an invitation from Burr, Chairman of the Connecticut Democratic State Central Committee, to speak at a canvass preceding the 1860 presidential election. Dix served as a U.S. senator from New York (1845-1848), Secretary of the Treasury under James Buchanan (1861), and governor of New York (1873-1875). During the Civil War, Dix, a Union major general, helped suppress the 1863 New York City draft riots.

Wood, Mayor of New York City, informs Burr, Chairman of the Connecticut Democratic State Central Committee, that he will be able to speak at a political convention preceding the 1860 Presidential election. Written on New York Mayor's Office stationery. Labeled "private." Wood also served as a U.S. congressman from New York (1841-1842, 1863-1864, and 1867-1882). He was an outspoken Peace Democrat during the Civil War. Burr was the founder of the Hartford Times, a Connecticut newspaper. He served as a Connecticut Delegate to the 1864 Democratic National Convention.
