Nanfan then further writes that Governor Nicholson, while aboard the frigate 'Shoram Prize,' captured a pirate and "rescued a great many good vessels he had taken," releasing three English prisoners taken by the Pirate. Bellomont, in Nanfan's words, "was cleared by a very great majority consequently with a great deal of honnour." Robert Livingston and Peter Schuyler, having been summoned to a memorial service held upon the death of the Earl of Bellomont, travelled to New York where (with the absence of the Lieutenant Governor) the Council illegally invited Coll Smith to become President of the Council.
