Title: Kentuckians, I am authorized by the president, of the Confederacy, to organize troops and issue commissions

Printed on vivid blue paper by Major General Kirby Smith. Says he has been authorized by Jefferson Davis to organize troops and issue commissions. Asks them to sign up in the name of loyalty to their home state of Kentucky. Says Breckenridge, Buckner and their Kentucky troops on their way to join them. Asks them to "Make one effort, strike one blow and your State will be saved from Yankee thraldom and take [its] place in the van of the Confederacy, where her interests, her institutions and her principles rightfully place her." Date inferred as early in the war from this quoted passage.

Confederate Major General Kirby Smith announcing that the Confederate Army "has again entered your territory, under my command." Says they are not coming as invaders, but under the principle that govenment derives its powers from the governed. Says he will maintain discipline of his troops and that he will pay for any subsistence procured. Says "We come invoking the spirit of your resolutions of 1798." Says they are coming to free them from Federal oppression. Asks "Are we deceived? - Can you treat us as enemies? - Our hearts answer - No."

Date taken from a pencil note on the envelope. One side of the envelope indicates the correspondence was sent under flag of truce terms to Mrs. Morgan, the wife of Confederate General John Hunt Morgan, care of Johnston in Richmond, Virginia. Johnston endorses on verso, writing "With congratulations on Genl Morgan's escape." Contains a five cent Confederate postage stamp. Johnston possibly signed in Richmond.

Signed twice (once struck out) by the famous abolitionist editor Garrison to Dole. Was writing to thank Dole for the 100 dollars he sent. Garrison did not know Dole before he sent the money. Speaks of his prison time for libel in Baltimore a month before and compares it to slavery, saying how much better his condition was. Says "Ah! dear sir, how wide the difference!" Lincoln authorizes a treaty with the Shoshonee Goship (Goshute) Bands of Indians dated October 12, 1863. The treaty was made at Tuilla Valley, Utah Territory. Brigadier General P. Edward Connor, commander of the military district of Utah, and Commissioner James Duane Doty, governor and acting superintendent of Indian affairs in Utah Territory, represented the United States. A chief named Tabby led several chiefs representing the Goshute Indians. Secretary of War Davis responds to a letter from California Senator Weller sent on 12 January 1857, which included an enclosed document from Thomas Buckmaster. Reports that Buckmaster claimed Davis had underestimated the amount of money Congress owed individuals and companies for supplies purchased by Crosman, (possibly George Hampton Crosman), former Major in the Army. Davis replied that Crosman's successor, Major Babbitt (possibly Edwin Burr Babbitt) has investigated the matter and sent an estimate on 24 January 1857 to the Ways and Means Committee.
