Duane was serving as mayor of New York and was married to Livingston's daughter Mary (mentioned in this letter as Polle).

Informs that he was the first brigadier general appointed in the Provisional Army of the Confederacy, and was the 5th full General appointed after the Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) on July 21, 1861.
