The letter has penciled underscorings and water stains on last page. The letter was written in a camp near Vicksburg.

Goodell sued Powell for the remainder of a bill for a steam engine Powell bought for use in a sawmill. Lincoln signed as a representative of the firm of Lincoln & Logan.
