Consists of two letters written in the hand of Samuel Shaw, Knox's aide de camp. In the first, which composes the top half of the page, Colonel Crane and Lieutenant Colonel Stevens inform Major General Knox that upon inspection, a quantity of salted beef in the contractor's store has been found "unmerchantable and unfit for use." The bottom half of the page consists of a letter from Knox to [Daniel] Parker and [William] Duer. Knox informs them that the beef is putrefied and "grows worse and worse, so that I have been obliged to order the inspection."

Signed by various underwriters. A policy of assurance for Henry Knox. Insures various amounts of money for cargos shipped between Thomastown [Thomaston, Maine?] to Bermuda. The vessel is insured for risk of "capture & condemnation" only, cargo is covered against all risks. Various sums of money are also listed next to each underwriter's signature. Colonel Laurens communicates George Washington's request that Knox send "one of the pieces taken in the Redout [sic] by the french troops...to the regiment of Gattenois." This was in accordance with general orders issued 20 October 1781. The ordnance was seized in the Battle of Yorktown. Laurens had marched to Yorktown as an aide to General George Washington.
