Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio writes the Assistant Adjutant General in Charleston, West Virginia to inform that some prisoners were sent to Columbus before receiving orders that they should go to Wheeling. Has telegraphed to correct this. Reports that a second detachment of prisoners has been sent to Wheeling as directed. Year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel. Signed with initials. On verso is the header for another letter "Head Qrs. 3d Prov. Brigade, Fayetteville, Va, 1862."

Colonel Scammon of the 23rd Ohio writes to General Cox commanding the division in Charleston, West Virginia about the location of Union and Confederate troops in the area. States that he has the names of several wealthy men who are able to furnish supplies for the army. Gives a list of the supplies they will need, including flour, beef cattle, corn, etc. Informs that is it good the companies are not marching today because the rain is bad. Possibly a draft copy as there are cross outs and inserts. Year inferred from Scammon's rank as Colonel.

Botsford of the 23rd Ohio asking if he should take a force of 250 from his regiment and 250 from another regiment and move on the Confederates in the morning. States, "I want revenge in some way for late injuries." With autograph endorsement signed of Brigadier General Eliakim P. Scammon stating that Powell should ready his regiment to move but tell his men to keep this a secret. On stationary of the U.S. Military Telegraph.

Copy of a letter from E. Nant to a cousin stating that he was arrested in August on orders of General Eliakim P. Scammon because of some letters he wrote after Jenkin's raid (Confederate General Albert G. Jenkins) that ended up in the hands of the Secretary of War. Expresses indignation at the arrest and charges even though Scammon apologized to him. States he put in a claim for damages to his property done by Union troops after Jenkin's raid and is being punished for that. With a clerical endorsement on verso by J. A telegram from Colonel Tomlinson to Brigadier General Scammon of the 23rd Ohio to say that he cannot be sure whether cavalry at Hughes Ferry will be able to find Gauley, West Virginia. Reports that the river has risen 18 inches in the last day. With pencil note, possibly by Scammon, stating that General Alfred Napoleon Alexander Duffie's troops should join them at Lewisburg Pike.
