Knox writes to Colonel Sears, Chancellor Livingston, Governor Clinton, and Broome, a merchant and bookseller. Recommends Colonel Stevens, possibly Ebenezer Stevens, to the recipients' acquaintance. Relates that Stevens will be taking up residence in New York City to work as "a dealer in lumber of all sorts, and probably to construct, for buildings of various kinds."

Inquires as to the number of men he should send from West Point to facilitate the minister's transportation.

Explains that he is having trouble collecting the sums owed to Thomas Flucker by the Deputy Sheriff. Says the sheriff made arrangements with Flucker prior to the war but now contends that he is not accountable for some of the money and does not owe interest on it. Knox does not personally object to the request, but writes that "the arrangement directed is with the entire concurrence of the President of the United States and embraces a variety of views- It seems to be a pretty prevalent opinion among the members of the Eastern States that the expences for the Western territories should be rather lessened than encreased." Secretary of War Knox tells Savage he read of the death of Savage's son Captain Joseph Savage. As he is fairly certain this is untrue, Knox wonders how that misinformation appeared in a Worcester newspaper. Knox tells about hearing from the port collector of Savannah Mr. Habersham as as well as Captain John Smith, both of whom "remember nothing of such an event."
