A print of a photograph of the main building of Illinois Soldiers College, established March 30th, 1866 in Fulton, IL as a school where disabled veterans and their children, as well as orphans of Union soldiers, could receive an education. The school was first established as the Western Union College and Military Academy in September of 1861. Funded by the state of Illinois and renamed in 1873 to Northern Illinois College, and then in 1903 to Hansen's Military Academy. It is an albumen print mounted on two layers of backing material.

Extremely rare salt print taken by George S. Cooke of the interior of Fort Sumter after it was taken by Confederate troops. With pencil inscription at the top of the mount: "With the new flag of the south now raised and our Southerners in the stronghold at Fort Sumpter [sic], we will see which sister states join the cause." A print of a photograph taken on January 8th, 1864, in Port Hudson, LA. Colonel Cyrus Hamlin [later made Brig. Gen]--son of Vice President Hannibal Hamlin--sits in the small one-horse sleigh at left. Behind him are officers of the 80th U.S. Colored Infantry [originally the 8th Corps d'Afrique], a black regiment he was raising at the time. Title from ink inscription on mount. A pencil note at the bottom identifies the soldiers on the sleighs. Small one-story structures can be seen in the background as well as trees. A mounted albumen print.
