He fears, however, that Harris will not have any money, and "If he should come home & bring me nothing God only knows what I shall do and which way I shall extricate my self." Peter Robert informs his father that he is sending a trading vessel to Quebec, and believes that his debts will soon be secured. With a copy of Governor Aubry's letter to Peter Robert, 11 July 1769, New Orleans, in which Aubry states that he has not had any luck procuring some money due to Peter Robert, and apologizes for the frustrating circumstances. He states that the opposition has no real authority, and believes that the people will soon stand up against their arbitrary policies as "Ignorance cannot long blind the People."

Peter Robert explains that a new writ stating the Manor's right for representation has just come before the Assembly, and he believes that DeLancey and Phillips "found to their great sorry that the Mannor had a greater right to send a Member than any of the Counties and that should they call the right of the Mannor in Question they would Call their own Seats in question therefore made a meritt of Necessity-." Peter Robert enclosed the writ with his letter, and hopes that it will pass the election without any more questionable interferences on the part of the opposition.

Title: to Robert Livingston, Jr. re: supporting political representation from the Manor

Duane states that it has come to his attention that James DeLancey proposed a motion that would prohibit the Manor of Livingston from sending a representative to the state legislature, claiming that it violated a previously un-enforced law. Duane expresses his outrage at such an idea and notes that "the Inhabitants of the Manor hold that priviledge by as good a Tenure as any Freeholders of any Country." He states plans to petition against the motion, and assures Robert, Jr. of his support throughout the dispute.

Duane states "With real Concern I observe your uneasiness at the Turn in the political world to the disadvantage of our Family," but states that Philip, (1716-1778) Livingston is to blame for his troubles in the legislature. According to Duane, "I say My Uncle Joined the presbeterean party; because whetehr he meant to do it or not, his Conduct had that Colour - of Consequence he was opposed in that Character."
