Asks that Sergeant Sarsons be mustered back into a New Hampshire regiment as a 1st Lieutenant, asserting that "Sergeant Sarsons is a deserving soldier." Expresses his pleasure about being asked to do a bust of General Sherman, "I should consider it a great privilege to be permitted to make a bust of him and am prepared to make a good many concessions to accomplish it."

However, the song does not mention a similar important journey to Romania in 1867, so it is possible that it was written between 1863 and 1867.
