Title: La Destruction de la Statue Royale a Nouvelle Yorck [New York]
New York Sons of Liberty destroying a statue of King George III. Highly imaginative scene with late Baroque buildings more characteristic of Germany or Austria or perhaps Holland. Hand-colored. Background shows a full-length statue (it was equestrian) and many turbaned slaves. (Slaves were, in fact, involved in pulling down the statue.) Plate mark "Aaaa no. 2" at bottom. Part of a series of Vues d'Optique printed at Augsburg; other prints in the series include Landing of the British troops (GLC 5860) and fire in New York (GLC 7754). Fowble, Two Centuries, 172.
