Knox writes to his wife from Fort Scott in Virginia. Expresses deep love for her constant support. Mentions the capture of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Anticipates a battle under the leadership Union General Ambrose E. Burnside. Comments that Union General William F. Barry cannot spare them from Washington D.C. Remarks the picture she sent of herself looks so sober, he hardly recognized her. Complains he hasn't been paid in almost seven months. Letter is dated 1862 in error.

Knox writes to his wife from Fort Scott in Virginia. Informs he was officer of the day. Reports he must take the company to Fort Ward. Mentions that a complete siege train is being prepared at the Washington arsenal for a sudden move. Suspects their destination is Richmond. Comments Union General Ulysses Grant will have no less than 200,000 troops outside Richmond. Promises his next letter will not be a war letter.

L'Enfant, Major of the Corps of Engineers, discusses receipt of pay for his service in the Revolutionary War. He was granted a leave of absence to return to France, and requests pay for the entire time he served (there was some question as to whether or not the engineers had been officially discharged).

Provides detailed instructions for the commander of West Point following the Congressional order to reduce the number of troops at that garrison to one company of 55 men. Knox writes to Viscount Noailles, brother-in-law of the Marquis de Lafayette. He expresses his friendship for Noailles, and discusses American trade and relations with Great Britain. Refers to public opinion of the Society of the Cincinnati, expressing his hope that the Society "will meet [Noailles's] approbation and those of our other friends in France." He recommends Mr. Tracy, the bearer of this letter. Mentions Lafayette, and asks Noailles to present his affections to mutual friends [in France].
