Shaw, on behalf of himself and Thomas Randall, his business partner, declares that their firm is bound to George Bell's firm in Ostend, Flanders (he spells it "Ostende;" in present-day Belgium) for a particular sum of money. Outlines the terms of the financial transaction, which apparently involves the sale by Bell of Shaw's merchandise, including an assortment of teas. Signature witnessed by Joseph Bell and George Irving.

Marked an extract of a letter from Philips, Cramond & Co. to George Bell. Samuel Shaw's name is written in place of an address. Declares that the bond they received from Shaw was satisfactory, but he seems to have misunderstood certain terms related to Bell's portion of the contract. Relates how they rectified the situation with Shaw. The third page says that Mr. Cramond asks that Shaw read and sign for the value of some tea at the bottom of the agreement.

Andrews would like an appointment as Surgeon's mate and hopes Knox will forgive his effrontery in asking. Explains that the field of medicine is very crowded at present. Includes an excerpt from a letter from Samuel Danforth dated December 1789 which recommends him and certifies his studies in medical school.

Includes several letters written by Shaw. In the first letter, to Kellock, written on 6 April, Shaw thanks Kellock for his help while Shaw was delayed on board a ship and at sea for several weeks longer than expected. Due to the delay he may not be able to depart immediately for China, as planned, but this may be all for the best; he will depart in December. In the meantime he will arrange business with Kellock, Bell, and Buchannan. In the second letter, to Bell, written on 6 April, Shaw explains his new plans for sailing to China in December, and discusses business arrangements he made…

Writes that the Consul of France has asked Breck to enclose a letter for Knox to forward (not present). The Consul is apparently afraid that the letter will be miscarried, so asks if the addressee (a Mr. De Rome) could send his reply via Knox. Relates that his wife, Mrs. Breck, is looking forward to a visit by Mrs. Knox and the children. Explains that the state of Massachusetts is calm at present, and the financial crisis in New York has not extended to his region. Sends his compliments to Henry Jackson, if Jackson is with him.
